Overview

The Steel Blue Southern Cross Zip in Slate is a 150mm S3-rated men’s side-zip safety boot with a scalloped, padded collar and a quick-release industrial-grade side zip. It pairs a 200J steel toe cap and protective scuff cap with premium water-resistant nubuck leather, so you lace once for the perfect fit, then zip on and off all day on site. A sharp, hard-wearing colourway on Steel Blue’s most popular UK boot.

Underneath, a TPU outsole is slip and oil resistant (SRC) and heat resistant to 130°C, a penetration-resistant midsole guards against nails and sharps, and a soft Baltico® lining wicks sweat away across a long shift, with anti-static protection to stop static building up. The 150mm ankle height gives solid support for construction, groundwork and general trade, and it’s backed by hundreds of verified five-star reviews — comfort straight out of the box is what customers mention most.

Backed by Steel Blue’s 30-day 100% comfort guarantee and 6-month manufacturer warranty, so you can put them to work risk-free.

See them in action in our Southern Cross Slate unboxing video, or compare the Southern Cross vs Parkes here.

Who it’s for

The Southern Cross Zip Slate suits trades that need a comfortable, all-day S3 boot with easy on/off and good ankle support: construction, civil engineering, groundwork, warehousing, logistics, farming and landscaping. The water-resistant leather and SRC outsole make it a dependable all-rounder for the typical mix of indoor and outdoor UK site work. Prefer a lower-cut boot? Look at the 95mm Parkes instead.

Sizing & fit

Steel Blue boots are true to size — order the same size as your usual trainer. If you’re a half size, we recommend sizing down (we rarely get these exchanged for being too small). If the fit isn’t right, send them back and we’ll exchange them for the size you need at no extra cost.

How to look after your boots

Why buy from BIG Boots UK?

We’re a small, family-run business (a husband-and-wife team) that has sold Steel Blue boots since 2020, and we were one of the first to sell them online in the UK. Originally from Australia, our knowledge and love of Steel Blue is second to none — our founder Ryan has worn Steel Blue boots for over 15 years. As an authorised UK distributor, every pair is genuine, fully warranted, and backed by people who actually wear the boots.

FAQs

What’s the difference between the Southern Cross and the Parkes?
Both are Steel Blue S3 side-zip safety boots with the same protection. The main difference is height: the Southern Cross is a taller 150mm ankle boot, while the Parkes is a lower 95mm mid-cut hiker style. Choose the Southern Cross for more ankle support, or the Parkes for more freedom of movement.

Are Steel Blue Southern Cross boots true to size?
Yes. Steel Blue boots fit true to size, so order your normal trainer size. If you’re a half size, size down — we rarely see these returned for being too small. Exchanges are free if the fit isn’t right.

What does the S3 safety rating mean?
S3 is the standard rating for most UK construction and outdoor trade work under EN ISO 20345. It means the boot has a 200J protective toe cap, a penetration-resistant midsole, a water-resistant upper, anti-static properties and an energy-absorbing heel. The Southern Cross Zip Slate meets the full S3 specification.

Do Steel Blue boots need breaking in?
Most customers find the Southern Cross comfortable straight out of the box with little to no break-in, thanks to the padded collar and Steel Blue’s comfort system. Using the recommended lacing technique helps you get the best fit from day one.

Are these boots waterproof?
The Southern Cross Zip Slate has a water-resistant nubuck leather upper that handles damp conditions and light wet, but it is not fully waterproof. For prolonged standing water or heavy wet groundwork, choose a fully waterproof S7-rated boot such as the Steel Blue Southern Cross Zip Waterproof S7.

Do you offer next day delivery?
Yes. All Steel Blue boots come with free express next-day delivery via Royal Mail when ordered before 2pm on business days. If you need a guaranteed, confirmed next-day slot, DPD next-day is available for £8.

How long have you been selling Steel Blue boots?
Ryan has worn Steel Blue and Australian work boots his whole working life, and has been selling them here in the UK since 2020 — making BIG Boots UK one of the very first online retailers of Steel Blue boots in the country. In that time we’ve built our reputation on genuine product knowledge and the trust of our customers, who know we only recommend boots we’d wear ourselves.

Steel Blue Boots are very true to size when it comes to their fit. We recommend whatever size trainer you wear, is the size of boots you should purchase. If you're a half size, we recommend you buy the smaller size.

If the work boots don't fit, please send them back and we'll exchange them for the size you require for no extra cost.

Unfortunately not, we do ship to Northern Ireland however due to brexit and the complications with shipping and then duties costs, we find it better for customers to try and find a local supplier as it will save you money on duties.

Northern Ireland customers do not have to pay duties as you’re part of the United Kingdom and postage is the same as the mainland.
