Overview

The Steel Blue Southern Cross Waterproof S7 in Black is a genuinely waterproof, 200J steel toe lace-up safety boot — the black version of Steel Blue’s wet-weather Southern Cross, built for days when the ground is soaked and the rain doesn’t stop. It’s certified S7, which means full S3-level protection plus certified waterproofing of the whole boot, not just a water-resistant leather finish.

The waterproofing comes from premium black cowhide leather that’s waterproof in its own right, combined with sealed seams so water can’t creep in through the stitching. Unlike the Distressed Brown version, this one is a traditional lace-up with no side zip — a clean, classic 150mm work boot with one less opening to worry about, and a firm, secure fit you set with the laces.

Underneath it’s the Southern Cross you know. Steel Blue’s Trisole® Comfort Technology — a three-density sole with Poron® pads under the foot’s pressure points and a soft polyurethane full-length footbed — takes the sting out of long shifts on hard ground. A penetration-resistant midsole guards against nails and sharps, the abrasion-resistant scuff cap protects the toe, and a Baltico® lining wicks sweat away so your feet stay dry from the inside as well as the outside.

Who it’s for

This is the boot for wet, muddy, outdoor work: groundwork, civils, construction, agriculture, landscaping, forestry, utilities and road work — anywhere standing water and rain are part of the job. If you want the waterproofing of the S7 but prefer a sharp black lace-up over a side zip, this is the one. If you’d rather zip on and off, the Distressed Brown version has a waterproof side zip.

How to look after your boots

Are these boots genuinely waterproof?
Yes. They’re S7 certified, which requires the whole boot to resist water penetration and absorption — not just a treated upper. The leather is waterproof and the seams are specially sealed, so they’re built to keep feet dry in properly wet conditions.

What does the S7 rating mean, and how is it different from S3?
S7 is a rating from the EN ISO 20345:2022 standard. It includes everything S3 offers — a 200J toe cap, penetration-resistant midsole, antistatic protection and energy-absorbing heel — and adds certified waterproofing. If you need waterproof safety boots, S7 is the rating to look for.

Does the black Southern Cross Waterproof have a side zip?
No — the black S7 (392603) is a traditional lace-up. If you want a side zip, the Distressed Brown Waterproof S7 has a waterproof industrial-grade zip.

Steel or composite toe?
This model has a 200J steel toe cap. If you need a metal-free boot, the Southern Cross also comes in composite (Granite and Black Amber), though those are S3 rather than waterproof S7.

Do Steel Blue boots need breaking in?
Most customers find the Southern Cross comfortable straight out of the box, thanks to the padded collar and Trisole® comfort system. Lacing them properly from day one helps you get the best fit.
