Overview
The Steel Blue Southern Cross Zip in Granite is a 150mm S3-rated menâs side-zip safety boot with a lightweight composite toe cap â the newest colourway on Steel Blueâs most popular UK boot, and a genuine head-turner. The metal-free composite toe meets the same 200J impact standard as steel but weighs less and wonât set off metal detectors, making it ideal for airports, secure sites, electrical work and anyone who wants a lighter boot underfoot.
It pairs premium water-resistant nubuck leather with a scalloped padded collar, a protective scuff cap and a quick-release industrial-grade side zip, so you lace once for the perfect fit, then zip on and off all day on site. Underneath, a TPU outsole is slip and oil resistant (SRC) and heat resistant to 130°C, a penetration-resistant midsole guards against nails and sharps, and a soft BalticoŽ lining wicks sweat away across a long shift, with anti-static protection built in.
Backed by Steel Blueâs 30-day 100% comfort guarantee and 6-month manufacturer warranty, so you can put them to work risk-free.

Also available in composite as Black Amber. Prefer a steel toe? The Southern Cross also comes in Sand, Black and Slate.

Who itâs for
The Southern Cross Granite suits trades that want a taller, supportive boot with the benefits of a composite toe: electricians and anyone working around live electrics, airport and secure-site staff, construction, civil engineering and groundwork. If you want a lighter, metal-free boot with good ankle support and easy on/off, this is the one. Prefer a lower-cut boot? Look at the 95mm Parkes instead.
Sizing & fit
Steel Blue boots are true to size â order the same size as your usual trainer. If youâre a half size, we recommend sizing down (we rarely get these exchanged for being too small). If the fit isnât right, send them back and weâll exchange them for the size you need at no extra cost.
How to look after your boots
- Treat them with Steel Blue Dubbin for extra protection and to condition the leather.

Why buy from BIG Boots UK?
Weâre a small, family-run business (a husband-and-wife team) that has sold Steel Blue boots since 2020, and we were one of the first to sell them online in the UK. Originally from Australia, our knowledge and love of Steel Blue is second to none â our founder Ryan has worn Steel Blue boots for over 15 years. As an authorised UK distributor, every pair is genuine, fully warranted, and backed by people who actually wear the boots.
FAQs
Whatâs the difference between a composite and a steel toe cap?
Both meet the same 200J impact protection standard. A composite toe is made from non-metallic materials, so itâs lighter, doesnât conduct heat or cold, and wonât trigger metal detectors â ideal for airports, secure sites and electrical work. The Granite Southern Cross uses a composite toe; the Sand, Black and Slate use steel.
Whatâs the difference between the Southern Cross and the Parkes?
Both are Steel Blue S3 side-zip safety boots with the same protection. The main difference is height: the Southern Cross is a taller 150mm ankle boot, while the Parkes is a lower 95mm mid-cut hiker style. Choose the Southern Cross for more ankle support, or the Parkes for more freedom of movement.
Are Steel Blue Southern Cross boots true to size?
Yes. Steel Blue boots fit true to size, so order your normal trainer size. If youâre a half size, size down â we rarely see these returned for being too small. Exchanges are free if the fit isnât right.
What does the S3 safety rating mean?
S3 is the standard rating for most UK construction and outdoor trade work under EN ISO 20345. It means the boot has a 200J protective toe cap, a penetration-resistant midsole, a water-resistant upper, anti-static properties and an energy-absorbing heel. The Southern Cross Zip Granite meets the full S3 specification.
Do Steel Blue boots need breaking in?
Most customers find the Southern Cross comfortable straight out of the box with little to no break-in, thanks to the padded collar and Steel Blueâs comfort system. Using the recommended lacing technique helps you get the best fit from day one.
Do you offer next day delivery?
Yes. All Steel Blue boots come with free express next-day delivery via Royal Mail when ordered before 2pm on business days. If you need a guaranteed, confirmed next-day slot, DPD next-day is available for ÂŁ8.
How long have you been selling Steel Blue boots?
Ryan has worn Steel Blue and Australian work boots his whole working life, and has been selling them here in the UK since 2020 â making BIG Boots UK one of the very first online retailers of Steel Blue boots in the country. In that time weâve built our reputation on genuine product knowledge and the trust of our customers, who know we only recommend boots weâd wear ourselves.

Do you ship to Europe and Ireland?
Unfortunately not, we do ship to Northern Ireland however due to brexit and the complications with shipping and then duties costs, we find it better for customers to try and find a local supplier as it will save you money on duties.Â
Northern Ireland customers do not have to pay duties as youâre part of the United Kingdom and postage is the same as the mainland.Â
